The kids and I just finished reading The Rats of NIHM and so, as a treat, RD and I bought the movie (Wal-Mart bargain bin!) for the kiddos. What a disappointment! The movie hardly resembled the book at all! The plot was similar, but the way events played out and the personalities of the characters were totally "adapted" from its original version. :-(

Not so sure we'll do the video-after-the-book thing again. The "movie" that played out in our minds as we read through the book together was SO much more rewarding.

I am almost always disappointed by the movie version of a book. The plots in books don't have to be 'rushed' to fit into a 2 hour time slot like a movie does. And why do script writers think they can do a better job of writing the plot than the original author? Annoying!

A couple movies that are as good as the book, in my opinioin, are "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck (your kids will have to be older to appreciate this classic, but you and RD would probably enjoy it) and the new "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" movie that came out a couple years ago (use your discretion with the kiddos--it's somewhat violent in a scene or two).

I'm excited to start reading 'chapter' books out loud with Riley like you are doing with your kids. Hopefully in the next year or two we can start it up. She's too easily distracted now if there aren't enough pictures!

The Devil wears Prada movie is the same thing- the book was WAY better, and I was so dissapointed with the movie. So much in the movie was completely different than the book. Including the ENDING! Don't people realize that if people enjoyed the book enough to watch the MOVIE, then they really don't want anything changed!

One movie we watched that was "similar" to the book was Charlotte's Web.
